Ingenious, Versatile, Marvellous Paper!

This term, we have explored the wonderful and various grades, styles, purposes and capabilities of paper! We:

  • pulled our own lovely sheets from paper pulp; we also added flower/vegetable seeds to make seed papers
  • created a delicious-looking burger book using our handmade papers
  • decorated a seed envelope, to hold the seed paper cards
  • made an origami climbing cicada, a tumbling ‘lozenge’ and a boomerang that really did come back!
  • constructed and decorated a small diorama with a person on a swing
  • designed and made a gorgeous mobile or articulated creature (personal choice)
  • had a great time making multimedia ATCs (Artist Trading Cards). This involved careful cutting, glueing, thoughtful mark-making and selection of thematic materials, and at one point, a ton of glitter! Some students chose to trade their fabulous ATC artworks, an activity inviting detailed art appreciation and many positive comments!
  • explored pop-up mechanisms, especially “muscles” that pull objects up when the page is opened
  • discovered the special attributes of crepe paper (we made a vase of flowers- folding, cutting, stretching, glueing… and using wax-covered crepe paper florists’ tape)
  • constructed a tiny paper dragon automaton, using wire, wire tools, safety glasses and jewellery-making expertise
  • folded a very cute Easter basket, using a simple paper cup
  • used Gelli plates to print lovely A2 papers (choosing analogous colours ), which we then folded, cut and glued, to make gorgeous display albums for our ATCs

Thankyou very much to the artists and artists’ families for your support of our art program here at LimeDoor Studio! I hope you had fun learning about some of the amazing ways to use paper, and I wish everyone a safe, relaxing and fun school holiday!
